During the month of May, Green Alternatives will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of the Lions Club’s “Recycle for Sight” program. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families. Children's eyeglasses are especially needed. Reading glasses are also useful because many recipients are in need of visual correction to help them perform close-up tasks. Sunglasses are needed by people living near the equator in order to shield their eyes from the sun's damaging rays.
